How to Use Music While Students Work

Isn't it distracting? Not when applied properly. Here's how...


Ask a room of teachers whether music helps students concentrate and you will get a fight. Half will tell you it is a distraction and the other half will tell you their students cannot work without it. Both camps are arguing the wrong question.


Music is not one thing. The question is never whether to have music on. It is which music, at what volume, during which kind of work. Get those three right and the room settles. Get them wrong and you have added a second task to every desk in it.


The Promontory Academy takes the position that a learning environment is designed rather than inherited, and that sound is one of the things you design. What follows is how to do it.


Go instrumental whenever the work involves words


This is the closest thing to a hard rule in the whole field. Lyrics compete directly with the language centres of the brain, and anything a student is reading, writing or composing is already using them.


A 2023 study, Should We Turn off the Music? Music with Lyrics Interferes with Cognitive Tasks, found measurable interference with verbal memory, visual memory and reading comprehension. That is not a small tax on a small subset of the work. Reading and writing are most of what a student does in a day.


So during reading, drafting, note-taking and any spoken preparation, run instrumental only. Save anything with a voice on it for tidying up, transitions, or the end of a session.


Keep it quiet, and keep it in the background


Volume does more damage than genre. A small body of research points to what is sometimes called "soft-fast" music as the most supportive combination for working, with loud-fast, soft-slow and loud-slow all working against it. Loud is the variable to watch first.


The practical setting is lower than most adults instinctively choose. If a student has to raise their voice slightly to ask a question, it is too loud. It should sit under the conversation, not alongside it.


And it should never surprise anyone. A track with a sudden dynamic swing, an unexpected key change, or a long silence followed by a crash will pull every head in the room up at once. Whatever else it is, it is not background.


Favour steady tempo and predictable structure


Music in the region of 60 beats per minute sits close to a calm resting heart rate, and the body will entrain to it. Many slow Baroque movements land in that range, which is one reason they keep turning up in every list of study music ever written.


Predictability matters as much as tempo. A great deal of Baroque and Classical writing was built on formulas: steady rhythm, clear voice leading, harmonic motion you can anticipate without thinking about it. The brain finds the pattern, holds onto it lightly, and then leaves it alone. That is precisely what you want from a background layer. It gives attention something stable to lean against without asking anything back.


Bach is the reliable default here, particularly alongside analytical work, for exactly this reason. Vivaldi and the wider Baroque repertoire work for the same structural reasons.


Be honest about Mozart


You will find the "Mozart Effect" cited in almost every article on this subject, usually the 1993 study by Rauscher, Shaw and Ky using the Sonata for Two Pianos in D major. It is worth knowing what the evidence actually shows, because the popular version is wrong and repeating it damages your credibility with anyone who has looked into it.


The largest meta-analysis on the question, covering nearly forty studies and over three thousand participants, found the effect small and, more importantly, not specific to Mozart. Any pleasant, moderately energising music produced comparable results. When researchers compared Mozart's bright sonata against a slow, melancholy Albinoni adagio and then controlled for mood and arousal, the Mozart advantage disappeared entirely.


The useful conclusion is not that music does nothing. It is that the mechanism is arousal and mood rather than anything special about a particular composer. Pleasant and mildly energising is the specification. Mozart happens to meet it. So do a great many other things.


This also means a student's own preference carries real weight, because enjoyment is part of the mechanism rather than a concession to it. The Harvard psychiatrist Srini Pillay has argued that familiar music a person already knows and likes is among the most powerful concentration tools available, since it engages motor regions, steadies emotion and lowers cortisol at once. If a student works better with something you would not have chosen, the research is on their side, provided it clears the instrumental and volume rules above.


Treat silence as a setting, not a failure


Music should be a default rather than a requirement. Some blocks are better without it, particularly anything requiring sustained mental arithmetic, memorisation, or a genuinely difficult first read of an unfamiliar text.


Notice which ones in your own room and write them down. The goal is a deliberate choice for each kind of work, not a radio that goes on at nine and off at three.


What to avoid entirely


Streaming playlists with advertisements. An advert breaking into a focused block is worse than no music at all, and no amount of good selection survives it.


Shuffle across a broad library, which guarantees that sooner or later something arrives that nobody expected.


Anything students will want to talk about. A track that generates commentary has become a topic rather than an environment, and you will not get the room back for ten minutes.

And anything chosen because the adult likes it. This is the most common failure and the hardest to see in yourself.


Why any of this is worth the trouble


There is a persistent belief that concentration is a matter of character, and that a student who cannot focus in a given room simply needs more discipline. The research on environmental factors says something less flattering and more useful. The brain is shaped by what surrounds it. Change the inputs and you change how well a person can work, before any question of willpower arises.


That is why the sound in a room deserves the same attention as the seating, the light and the paper. None of these produce learning on their own. Together they decide how much of a student's capacity is available for the actual work, and how much is being spent on the room.

Sound is not decoration. Treat it as part of the design, and choose it on purpose.
