Why We Always Have Music On in Class

Isn't it distracting? Nope. We do it on purpose.
If you visit a Promontory Academy session on any given afternoon, the first thing you will probably notice is the music. It is almost always on. Quietly, in the background, but on. And the question that follows, almost without exception, is: isn't that distracting?
The honest answer is: it would be distracting if it were the wrong music. So we are careful about which music.
This is not a stylistic choice. It is a deliberate one, grounded in what the research actually says about how the brain works while it is doing focused work.
What the music is doing
When a student is reading a primary source, working through a math problem, or composing a Prove It paragraph, the brain is doing several things at once. It is processing language or numbers. It is filtering out irrelevant inputs. It is regulating stress so that working memory stays available. And it is releasing dopamine, the neurotransmitter associatedwith reward and motivation, that keeps the work feeling worth doing.
Music can interfere with all of those processes, or it can support them. The variable that determines which is which is thekind of music.
The research suggests a few things fairly consistently:
Instrumental music is usually better than music with lyrics for tasks that involve reading, writing, or any kind of verbal processing. Lyrics compete with the language centers of the brain.
A 2023 study, Should We Turn off theMusic? Music with Lyrics Interferes with Cognitive Tasks, found that lyrics measurably hindered verbal memory,visual memory, and reading comprehension. So we lean instrumental during reading-heavy blocks.
Tempo matters.
A small body of research has found that what is sometimes called "soft-fast" music is most supportive of learning, while "loud-fast," "soft-slow," and "loud-slow" combinations tend to work against it. Tempos in the range of about 60 beats per minute are also common in slow Baroque movements, which roughly matches a calm resting heart rate. The body, in other words, can entrain to the music in a way that supports rather than disrupts focus.
Predictable, structured music helps the brain pattern-match without demanding attention.
Classical music from the Baroque and Classical eras was often composed using formulas. Steady rhythms, clear voice leading, predictable harmonic motion. The brain finds the structure, latches onto it lightly, and then gets out of its own way.
Familiar music has its own role.
The Harvard psychiatrist and brain researcher Srini Pillay has argued that familiar music, music a person already knows and likes, is in some ways the most powerful concentration tool, because it activates motor regions, regulates emotion, and reduces cortisol all at once. We do not always pick familiar music in class, but we factor in the principle: the music should not jump-scare anyone.
Mozart, and why one piece in particular gets named.
The phrase "Mozart Effect" entered popular culture in the 1990s, after a study by Rauscher, Shaw, and Ky showed that listening to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major produced a temporary boost in spatial reasoning on a follow-up test.
The original finding has been studied, debated, qualified, and refined over the decades since. The simple version, that Mozart makes you smarter, is not what the research supports. The more careful version, that certain pieces of well-structured classical music can produce short-term gains in focus, spatial reasoning, and pattern recognition, has held up.
What is interesting about the K.448 study, and about Mozart in D major more broadly, is the structural reason it seems to work. Mozart's writing in D major tends to be bright, rhythmically buoyant, harmonically clear, and contrapuntally rich without being chaotic. The brain gets pattern, balance, and a steady sense of forward motion, all without being asked to decode it. That is close to ideal as a background for cognitive work.
When we use Mozart at TPA, the D major works tend to be the ones in rotation. Not because of any magic. Because thestructure of the music is doing real work alongside the student.
What the playlist looks like
A typical TPA session uses some combination of:
Bach. The counterpoint and mathematical regularity make for a stable, non-distracting soundscape that pairs especially well with analytical work.
Mozart. Especially the D major works, but the broader chamber and divertimento literature too. Vivaldi and other Baroque composers, particularly slow movements with steady tempos in the 60-bpm range.
Selected modern instrumental music with similar structural characteristics, especially during Studio blocks wherestudents are working independently on creative output.
Occasional silence. Music is the default, but not the requirement. There are blocks where silence is the better choice, and we use it. The volume is always low. The music is always in the background. It is not a soundtrack to dance to. It is a structured ambient layer that gives the brain something predictable to lean against while it is doing demanding work.
The deeper reason
There is a temptation to treat focus as a purely individual matter, a question of willpower and self-discipline. The research on environmental factors, including music, says something different. The brain is shaped by its inputs. What surrounds a student while they are working changes how well they can work.
Designing a learning environment with care, including the choice of music, is part of taking the work seriously. It is the same reason TPA pays attention to the height of the chairs, the natural light, the way the oval table is arranged, and the kind of paper students write on. None of these things produce learning by themselves. All of them, together, make focused work more possible than it would be otherwise.
The music is not background decoration. It is part of the room.
